Work with us
Trustee
Location: Remote/Worldwide
Time Commitment: Minimum 4 hours per month; meetings per quarter
Benefits: Paid expenses, opportunities to join fundraising events
What we need:
We are currently launching our new strategy and as part of that, we want to broaden the skills and experience of our board. We are looking for people who are passionate about the work we do, who are able to provide support, share ideas and inspire our team and our work. It doesn’t matter where in the world you are; what matters is your drive, commitment to change and what you can bring to the table.
We are especially keen to broaden the demographic of our board and to gain more contextual insight of where we work. People with a connection to, or currently in Kenya, particularly those working in or with experience of maternal and neonatal health, are strongly encouraged to apply.
As a Child.org Trustee, we expect you to:
- Work with fellow board members and the senior management team to help in delivering Child.org’s strategy to 2030
- Be a proactive, effective ambassador for Child.org
- Prepare for and fully participate in Board meetings
- Act reasonably in decision making and leadership of the organisation
- Manage risks with considered, proportionate and balanced approach
- Use any specific skills, knowledge or experience you have to help the Board of trustees reach quick and sound decisions by leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives or other issues in which you have special experience
- Support Child.org’s Chief Executive and wider leadership team
- Ensure that Child.org’s purpose and principles are upheld in the delivery of its objectives
- Support income generation in ways that best utilise your strengths
The people we need are:
- Willing to devote the necessary time and effort to being an effective Trustee (and Chairperson)
- Committed to our Vision, Approach, Values and Goals
- Leaders, with demonstrable skills and experience
- Highly emotional intelligence with a high level of self-awareness
- Strategic in their vision, with an understanding of strategic delivery
- Balanced with an informed approach to risk
- Passionate about maternal and neonatal health
- Understanding and accepting of the legal, financial, audit and other regulatory requirements of a charity
The commitment we need from you:
It takes commitment to be an effective trustee: to stay up to date, to develop a solid knowledge base, to speak with confidence about our work and to be able to make informed, strategic decisions for the organisation.
For us, that commitment requires trustees to meet regularly and be willing to get involved in the organisation strategically beyond Board meetings.
The core commitment is to:
- Attend four Board meetings a year: all online but sometimes one in person (usually in the summer months, in Bristol).
- Attend our annual Shindig event
- Participate in a sub-group or mentor role
- Support and engage with staff
Agendas and papers are usually emailed to each Trustee a week before the meeting to give you plenty of time to read them.
The role is voluntary, however reasonable expenses are paid in line with Child.org’s expenses policy.
Our Board Structure:
Our board is made up of a Chair, and four other members, along with the CEO. The Senior Management Team joins at least one board meeting annually (the AGM in January) and sometimes more throughout the year. Trustees are appointed by the board by taking into account the specific needs of the organisation.
We are initially looking for two new Trustees, and plan to recruit for two more in 2025/26. All Trustees are appointed for a three-year term and can service consecutive terms.
Selection Process:
As a first step, please send your CV and expression of interest to clare@child.org which outlines why you think you could be a good fit for Child.org. If we agree that you could be, we will send you a short questionnaire and to arrange an informal interview with the chair of our board.
The next stage will be a formal interview with multiple board members and the CEO. We expect to appoint later in the year, around October, if not before.
